In 2012, I went to a regional grocery store chain to get my partner a greeting card for our first Valentine’s Day together. There was an entire aisle dedicated to Valentine’s Day cards, but I found it difficult to find a card that applied to the two of us. Most of the cards had a man and a woman, which automatically didn’t apply to me. The remaining cards had two cartoon animals sharing affection, but one of the animals always had long eyelashes, red lipstick, or some other feminine identifier. I was frustrated that there wasn’t a card that I could share with my partner that represented us. Fast forward to 2023, and I went to the same grocery store to buy a card to celebrate our 11 year anniversary, and still, nothing represented our relationship. I ended up looking on Etsy specifically for same sex relationship greeting cards and everything I found was covered in rainbows. I appreciate that those products exist, and I know that pride is important and saves lives, but my sexuality doesn’t always define me and it doesn’t define my relationship. So instead of being frustrated that the product I wanted didn’t already exist, I started thinking about what I would want and how I could make it myself. And I realized, I wanted what heterosexual people have always had - representation. It made me realize that representation matters to everyone, even straight people - otherwise, why would they need one of the squirrels on their cards to wear a dress and high heels, while the other squirrel wears a collared shirt and necktie? So, I founded Stamped Greeting, because I wanted more people like me to have the ability to gift their significant other with greeting cards that represented who they are, and what their relationship means to them. It may feel like a small gesture, but from personal experience, I know how important it is to feel seen and included. For now, Stamped Greeting cards will focus on a portion of the LGBT+ community, but my goal is for the company to allow everyone to put their own stamp on their cards, so everyone can feel included, represented, and most of all, loved.
